How to Install a Toilet

A new toilet will make a bathroom look and feel decades ahead of its predecessors. Most homeowners are capable of installing the plumbing flange on a bathroom that is already in place, whether it's from a previous installation or if it's new. To ensure that the wax ring is tightened, a friend can lift the toilet.

Apply the wax ring

Make sure to inspect the plumbing flange that will connect the toilet base to the sewer connection. A new wax ring is all you need to make sure it's in perfect condition and the right size for the new toilet. Use a putty knife to remove any wax or caulk around the flange. Then, apply a new wax band to the flange. You can also tilt the toilet to attach the wax ring to the base, but this requires help.

Lower the Toilet Base

After the wax ring has been placed on the base or the bottom, it is time to place the bowl and base. Toilets can be quite heavy so make sure to use good lifting techniques and get help from a friend. A helper can be used to check alignment and lower the base onto the wax rings. Before you press the toilet base down, compress the ring and align the bolts through the flange. Once everything is in alignment, press down the base evenly on the floor and then bolt it down. To avoid placing pressure on any single point or tilting the bowl, tighten the bolts in small increments around the base.

Attach the Tank and Water Supply

Install the gasket provided by the manufacturer if it isn't already installed at the top of your toilet base. The tank should be placed on the bowl's back, exactly as the base will fit over the bolts. Begin by gently lowering the tank and aligning all bolts. Then, tighten each bolt a few turns until the tank makes contact with the gasket. The only thing left is to reconnect the waterline and flush the tank. It is better to use leak detection dye immediately than wait for the tank or floor to leak.
